I share your attitude to the importance of titles, David, and have written about it myself here on Medium too. I would also add that while crafting irresistible titles is a crucial art for writers to master, it's important to resist the temptation to make them sound like clickbait, because it might attract the WRONG readers.
The best titles are ones that aren't only highly clickable, but that also indicate truthfully what readers can expect on the destination page, because it's the content itself they really care about.
The more accurate the headline, the higher the odds that the readers who click through to the article will find the content relevant and actually read and engage with it, rather than bounce right off (which is bad for SEO) as soon as they realize the article fails to live up to the 'promise' implied by the title.
